Villa Lante in Bagnaia and the “Monster-Park” of Bomarzo

Bagnaia is a small and charming historical town in Northern Lazio, in the Province of Viterbo. The town is famous for its great relic of aristocratic grandeur, the sixteenth-century Villa Lante constructed under the commission of the cardinals Gianfrancesco Gambara and Montalto and finished in 1612. The architecture of the park, designed by Vignola, belongs to one of the most beautiful examples of European garden history: fountains, cascades and dripping grottos stand in harmony with the architecture of the villa and the several sculptures distributed in the park. The Park of the Monsters at Bomarzo evokes a dreamy although somewhat bizarre landscape. “Qui ogni pensiero vola” is written on the face of an enormous stone mask: “Here every thought flies”. During our walk through the “Sacred Wood”, commissioned by Vicino Orsini, we will see strange architecture, monsters and masques- real fun not only for children!
